Michela Matteoli

Michela Matteoli is the head of the “Cell Biology of the Synapse” laboratory at the Dept. of Medical Pharmacology, University of Milano, Italy. M. Matteoli received her doctorate degree from the University of Pisa in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 she has been postdoctoral fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine and Visiting Scientist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Department of Neuroscience. In 1992 she established her laboratory at the CNR-Center of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology as CNR Researcher. Since 2002 she is Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Milano. She is currently Vice-Director of the Department of Medical Pharmacology at the University of Milano and Responsible of the Cell Model Platform in Fondazione Filarete, Milano. She is co-founder and President of Neuro-Zone, a spin off the University of Milano whose mission is to support drug discovery programs by providing multiparametric cell-based assays. M. Matteoli is member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Neuroscience, European Journal of Neuroscience and Archives Italiennes de Biologie. She has been in the Board of the Italian Society of Neuroscience, member of the Advisory Board of the CNR Institute of Neuroscience and member of international Audit Committees. She has been organizer of several national and international symposia and has been Elected Representative for the FENS 2009 Program Committee. She is past recipient of EMBO and IBRO Fellowships, has been Project Coordinator in a NATO Collaborative Research Grant, Partner in different European Projects (Bionic Ear, EUSynapse, EUROSPIN) and has been Coordinator of several international research networks, including Human Frontier Science Program. She holds a significant reviewer activity for both international funding agencies and prestigious scientific journals. Her area of research is concerned with the study of the mechanisms which control neuronal development and synaptogenesis and which influence the intercellular communication among neurons, microglia and astrocytes. The results of her research have implications for different Central Nervous System pathologies, including epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases. M. Matteoli has authored over 80 research papers and scientific reviews with an average Impact Factor of about 8 and several book chapters. Her H index is 36. She is member of national and international Societies in the field of Pharmacology and Neuroscience.
